The construction arena is getting very competitive. More prominent organizations handle the major development projects while smaller and newer ones must make evident their quality with numerous subcontracts before moving on to bigger ones.
My design company has just been given an assignment to create a new logo design samples for a local construction organization. To kick off the assignment, the art director and I visited our client’s office for a brief interview session to gather more information about the company.
Like many other organizations we have interviewed, most companies recognize they need a new identity to compete but are not quite sure what they want. That is where we come into play.
Before starting on the construction company logo design, we ordinarily inquire about the company history, its turnover, its philosophy, its specialty, its target market and exactly why it wants a new logo design samples; just to get a better feel of things.
We found out that they are a relatively young firm, 10 years in the business with 4 large subcontract projects and many smaller ones under their belts, each one more costly than the last. They are now seeking to adopt a blue ocean strategy and venture into eco-friendly medium cost suburban development – a niche with hardly any competitors – and thus taking the opportunity to build a reputation for themselves as one of the earliest names to service this niche.
From the meeting, we found out that they have the essential resources to handle medium scale development projects. Their identified niche has made it much easier to differentiate them from other developers.
At our office, we had our usual brainstorming session and and decided on the conceptual direction. After that we employed the expertise of 4 designers to produce individual interpretations or logo design to turn those creative concepts to logos.
After a couple of days, the logo concepts were ready for show. Some designs utilized stylized text while others used construction related graphics like levelers and tool pouches to get the point across. Even though all four logo design samples samples were unique in their own way, they all stuck to 2 crucial points.
Professionalism
Developers deal with costly projects. In order to be awarded such projects, they must always be regarded as a professional and responsible corporate citizen with admirable business ethics. Therefore, the neat and clear designs reflected that adequately.

Next the team should define the processes and their interaction, considering the supplier and customer of each process and inputs and outputs of each process in the quality management system.A flowchart is an easy way to show the sequence of processes and their interactions.Senior management should then define individual roles and responsibilities for ensuring the implementation, maintenance and improvement of each quality management system process and its interactions. The planning process owner’s responsibility in the quality management system would be for implementing, maintaining and improving the planning process and interacting effectively relevant processes including sales and production. The Planning Manager objectives should be in line with quality management system objectives for example 100% Accurate Production Plan.Senior management should establish a team with members from each process to oversee the quality management system.
The next stage of implementing the quality management system is to assess each process and determine and the most appropriate way of managing them and if they are to be documented.
The team should decide which documents such as graphical representations, written instructions, checklists, flow charts, visual media and electronic methods are best to quality management system process easily comprehendible. The process management team should then undertake a project implementing the quality management system processes and their activities as planned that including communication, awareness, training, change management, management involvement and review activities.
Monitoring and measuring should be applied to the quality management system processes. Measurement and monitoring to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of the quality management system process is a powerful management tool. At this stage there should be corrective and preventative actions taken as per the documented quality management system procedure. This should include the identification and elimination of the root causes and potential causes of the problems such as defects or lack of adequate process controls.

After a number of days, the logo concepts were ready for viewing. Some designs utilized stylized text while others used construction related graphics like hammers and trowels to get the point across. Although all 4 logo examples samples were unique in their own way, they all kept to to two main points.
